Recipe of the Week: Melomakarona (Honey Cookies with Walnuts)

The de-facto traditional Christmas Greek cookie, flavored with orange and brandy that is bathed in a sweet honey syrup and topped with chopped walnuts.

A fantastic addition to the Christmas table that is everpresent in Greek homes.

  • 2 cups olive oil
  • 1 cup of orange juice
  • Zest of one lemon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 kg soft flour
  • 1 cup semolina
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda, diluted with some brandy

For the Syrup

  • 2 cups of water
  • 4 spoons honey
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 7 clove sticks
  • Lemon rind

For the Topping

  • 1 teaspoon grounded cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup grounded walnuts


Mix oil, sugar, orange juice and water and add the rest of the ingredients. Mold pieces of dough of about 2 spoons and shape them into flattened oval shapes!

Place them on an oiled or non-stick baking sheet and bake them in 150 -175 C until brown.

Turn off the heat and let the sweets into the oven.

Prepare the syrup. Bring sugar and water to the boil. Boil the mixture with the cloves and the cinnamon. Boil for 10 minutes, add honey and let the syrup boil for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Pour the syrup over the sweets and let it be absorbed.
