Tour Details

The afternoon Hiking Tour of Meteora’s Caves hikes up the rock of Aghio Pnevma (Holy Spirit), which is located in the middle of the valley that extends from the village of Kastraki towards the vast rock complex of Meteora.

The 3 hrs hiking Meteora’s caves will guide you on the trails near the village of Kastraki. On top, a chapel made inside a cave and dedicated to Holy Spirit was erected by the very first hermit of Meteora. A hermit-monk named Varnavas who lived there in the 10th century. So, one could say that this rock became the birthplace of the monastic community of Meteora. It’s the rock where all began more than a thousand years ago.

Walk in the footsteps of those first hermit-monks of Meteora; see the caves where those faithful people chose to live centuries ago. Learn all the stories and the legends through the narrative of our guides. This hiking Meteora’s caves starts in the afternoon from the village of Kastraki, on the foothills of Aghio Pnevma rock, to lead you some 250 meters higher above the village. Filled with the most awesome views of the surrounding area you will then reach the prison cave of the monks, located on the northern side of Aghio Pnevma. The hike will then pass below the cave of St. George and it will finish at the central square of the Kastraki village.

This tour requires a good fitness state.

Difficulty level: Intermediate.

I am staying at an AirBNB. Where can I get picked up from?

We cannot pick up clients from AirBNBs for our tours. If you are staying in Kalampaka then you can come by our offices here to start the tour. If you are staying in Kastraki then you can meet us at our offices there.

I am staying at Trikala. Do you offer pick up from there?

Trikala is a city about 21km away from Kalampaka. Because of that, we do not offer pick up from there. You can catch the local bus to Kalampaka, which runs regularly and come by our offices here to start the tour.

How late can I make a booking?

You can make a booking with us literally at the last minute! Just keep in mind that there may be no seats left on the tour if you do that! We recommend booking at least one week in advance, in order to have the best chances of finding availability.

Which tours can I join on the same day?

We have split our tours to morning and afternoon ones. Furthermore, all our tours visit different places at Meteora. This way, you can combine any morning tour with any afternoon tour you wish! All all-time-classic combination is the Meteora Hiking Tour in the morning and the Meteora Sunset Tour in the afternoon.

What happens if it rains?

In case of bad weather the tour will be cancelled and you will get a full refund.

Meteora is absolutely stunning even in cold December!

We did the 3-day, 2-night rail tour of Meteora and Delphi. Other than some confusion finding the right train and seats (there was no English announcements or signs confirming where the train was heading, and the cars numbers were not clearly marked), we got to...
