Library of Kalampaka

The new Library of Kalampaka is a cultural anchor in the city, with a special focus on the needs of children and teens.

Efrosine Soulemanis and Athanassios Demoulas were born in Kalambaka, Greece. They moved to the United States in 1914 and were married in Lowell, Massachusetts, where they started a family.

Their son, George Demoulas, loved to see his relatives in Kalambaka. He visited often and enjoyed their hospitality. Over the years he helped build the first high school and the St. Vassarion church, when the town needed them.

George Demoulas’ daughter, Diana Demoulas Merriam, inherited her father’s love for Kalambaka. She established the Kalambaka Educational, Literary and Cultural Civil Not for Profit Company (KDK) in 2012. Its mission is to provide informational, educational, cultural and recreational services, both traditional and online, to enhance the social, cultural and economic vitality of Kalambaka’ s citizens.

KDK’s first project has been to renovate and refurbish the building in the city center that housed the Municipal Library, which comprised just two rooms and a minimal book collection. The renovation was completed and the Library opened on July 19, 2015 in honor of the birth date of George Demoulas.

Through an agreement with the Municipality, KDK will manage and operate the new Library for a minimum of five and up to a maximum of fifteen years, when the Library will revert to the management of the Municipality.
