We will pick you up from your hotel in Athens at 07.30. We will follow the road towards Meteora. We will make a short stop at the town of Trikala, for a coffee break or taste the local ice cream next to Litheos River, and afterwards we visit the first great monastery of Varlaam.
The Holy Monastery of Varlaam – The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery in the Metéora complex. It was built in 1541 and embellished in 1548 and located on the top of a rock at 380m height! A church, dedicated to All Saints, is in the Athonite type (cross-in-square with dome and choirs), with spacious exonarthex is surrounded by a dome. It was built in 1541/42 and decorated in 1548, the old refectory is used as a museum.
Our second visit will be at the Monastery of St. Stephen. This monastery rests on the plain rather than on a cliff. It was damaged by the Nazis during World War II who believed it was harboring insurgents and was abandoned. Nuns took it over and reconstructed it, furthermore you will admire a small treasure of Byzantine and Christian items, at the museum inside the monastery.
This wonderful tour will be completed at the picturesque villages of Kalambaka or Kastraki, where you will have a traditional Greek lunch! Afterwards, we will return at Athens.
The duration of this tours is about 10-12 hours as Meteora is 300 kilometers away from Athens.
